Known for five dockside riverboat casinos and world-class thoroughbred racing, Greater Shreveport also has a reputation for mouthwatering culinary delight. Downtown on Texas Street, the Hayride Diner (now operated by the Food Bank of Northwest Louisiana) dishes up regional fare in a nostalgic atmosphere, with lunch specials around $5. Sue’s Country Kitchen is open 24 hours for quick bites. The Hollywood Casino’s Epic Buffet provides an array of fresh seafood and ethnic dishes, while both Horseshoe Casino’s Village Square Buffet and Sam’s Town Casino’s International Buffet serve specialties from around the world. Barbeque fans flock to Arena Bar-B-Q and Steakhouse, Bodacious Barbecue, Country Tavern Barbecue, Podnuh’s Bar-B-Q, Slap Ya Mama Barbecue, and The Hickory Stick. Cajun lovers head to magnets like Blind Tiger, Crawdaddy’s Kitchen, and Crawfish Palace. Herby K’s touts its famed Shrimp Buster. Catfish reigns at Crescent Landing Catfish Restaurant, Johnny’s Catfish & Seafood, and Vince’s North Port. Yeero-Yeero and Athenian Delights provide Greek-styled nightlife amid gyros, moussakas and pastas, while L’Italiano Italian Restaurant serves classic dishes across from the East Bank Theatre. PieWorks invites patrons to design their own pizzas, and Olive Street Bistro serves Northern Italian with Tuscany flair. El Chico is the oldest Mexican eatery in Shreveport, and Tex-Mex favorites are big at Boomtown Casino’s Sundance Cantina, Posados Café, and Pancho’s Mexican Buffet. Southern style and soul are the specialty at Beam’s Restaurant, U an I Soul Food, Murrell’s Grill, and the landmark Old Adger Store, the latter serving chicken-fried steak and fresh speckled butter beans. Open from 6 a.m to 11 p.m., Strawn’s Eat Shops, at three locations, brag about being the finest greasy spoons around. Deli fare is plentiful at Fertitta’s, McAlister’s, L.A. Dawgs, and The Real Pickle. Red River District has dining, dancing, and live music. Marble Slab Creamery dips ice cream into fresh-baked cones, and Counter Culture, home of the Humphrey Yogurt, has three locations. Southern Maid Donuts serves 40 types of donuts and three types of kolaches. Other Shreveport sweet spots include My Pastry Chef Bakery & Café, Cambria Bistro & Bakery, and Silver Palate Bakery & Gifts.
